Let me start off with the tasty morsels and then I will move on to the mystery meat.
HAVE A COKER AND A SMILE
First off, multiple sources have reported that former Florida State quarterback and possible Bama transfer Jacob Coker is in Tuscaloosa this weekend. While the scenario of his transfer to Alabama is looking more and more likely, let's not count those chickens until they hatch in May/June.
THE RETURN OF MR. HAND
Just in case you are concerned about the nation's #1 recruit, Alabama commit and five-star defensive end Da'Shawn Hand is supposed to be back for an unofficial visit. His presence will certainly help with the recruitment of Marlon Humphrey, Coker, et al.
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO "HMMM???"
I have to be honest: I am not completely sure what is going on with some of these invites. A few other previously unreported visitors are in Tuscaloosa this weekend.
Ty Flournoy-Smith (6-3/230) is a 3-star juco tight end from Georgia Military College. Originally, he signed with Georgia out of Colquitt County HS in Moultrie, GA in 2012 and played in eight games as a freshman, mostly on special teams. You may remember an incident in which UGA safety Josh Harvey-Clemons and Flournoy-Smith were caught by campus police smoking left-handed cigarettes back in May 2013. Harvey-Clemons was suspended one game and Flournoy-Smith transferred to GMC. He does not have an offer from Bama but there is he is, eating sushi at Chuck's and doing the electric slide with Miss Terry (okay, not really but, yeah, he is there).
DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH?
Also enjoying the fun is 3-star East Coweta (Sharpsburg, GA) safety Markell Boston. He is committed to East Carolina and has few other major offers. He has good size (6-1.5/200) and reportedly runs a 4.50 in the 40. Alabama Defensive Coordinator Kirby Smart met with him in Sharpsburg this past week and invited him to the Capstone for a visit. Boston has only played on the defensive side of the ball for his senior season so it is possible he could be a hidden gem. Again, I don't believe Boston has an official offer as of yet but obviously Smart sees something in the kid. If you watch his highlight reel, you might see it too. He has good instincts and is not afraid of contact:
The thing that really perplexes me the most about these two guys visiting this late in the game is that the Crimson Tide has 23 solid commits out of 25 allowed to this class and the staff will likely hold offers for Humphrey, Matt Elam (Elizabethtown, KY), Rashaan Evans, and Chad Thomas (Miami, FL) up until national Signing Day on February 5th. Are these guys "Plan B's"? Or perhaps the Alabama staff is offering these guys preferred walk-on status.
SPEAKING OF WALK-ONS
Alabama is also hosting some preferred walk-ons not mentioned above this weekend but I do not have names as of yet. I will update this post when I do.
ROLL TIDE!
