In 1935, Alabama's head coach Frank Thomas was featured in Sport Story Magazine, giving an explanation of his approach to football as well as a detailed analysis of the Crimson Tide's performance in that year's Rose Bowl -- a 29-13 victory over Stanford. I recently laid my hands on this publication and wrote about it over at Remember the Rose Bowl. It's a fascinating look at the philosophy behind the Tide's game 77 years ago. "Eleven players who can block, tackle and handle the ball, and who carry out to the very limit of their powers each individual assignment every play -- that's my idea of a real football team!" Thomas wrote. Yeah, I think he'd approve of Coach Saban's care of his program.
Reuben Foster transfers to Auburn High School. This move effectively ends his "commitment" to UA. Rumor is that Coach Flowers gets a position with the move.

Believe it or not, yet another Arkansas head coach was too dumb to realize that the call and data records from a public university-provided cell phone could be obtained with a simple FOIA request. As it turns out, Petrino was texting Dorrell like they were in high school, though the text volume was noticeably down when the Hogs made the road trip to Tuscaloosa. Oh, and pics are apparently on the way, so the worst may be yet to come. Addendum: You can view the phone records at Deadspin.
Mark Barron is one of six Bama prospects we've made, or will be making, player profile videos for leading up to the NFL Draft. Hopefully y'all will like this one more than Trent Richardson! Wish he'd fall to the Steelers. Looks like the real deal.
"Our expectations in character and integrity in our employees can be no less than what we expect of our students," Jeff Long said. "No single individual is bigger than the team." If there was one overarching failure that caused Petrino's career to come to this kind of an end, that was it. Not just thinking that he was bigger than the program -- there are a lot of coaches that think the same thing about their programs -- but the fact that Petrino's sense that he was larger than Arkansas turned into a feeling of invincibility and a belief that the rules no longer applied to him. If he ever thought they did to begin with.
Bobby Petrino Fired By Arkansas; Gave Jessica Dorrell $20,000 Gift - Team Speed Kills And thus, the Petrino era at Arkansas comes to a close, though the legal fallout from all of this is likely to be lengthy. No word yet on how Arkansas will deal with the head coaching vacancy in the interim (though at this point logic almost demands they follow the Ohio State "interim coach for a year then go after a big name" model), but what a strange turn of events for a program that was a dark horse SEC/National Title contender a few weeks ago. They held a "rally" tonight at Arky to show their massive support for Petrino. I had heard they were hoping for 8,000. From the looks of it about 150 folks showed and that is being generous. Of course the picture could be at a bad angle, but I suspect the Hog fan base by-in-large does not really care. If I were the AD and saw this turn out CBP would be gone.
A interesting piece from the Sporting News on Florida and Urban Meyer. Pretty crazy stuff to say the least.
