Sam Gordon and the crew at The Overtime was able to get some extraordinary access to Alabama’s newest wide receiver recruit, Miami’s Xavier Williams. As he prepared for the Under Armour All-America Game, they talked about playing Murderball, what it’s like to receive a big-time offer, and more.
Very cool
If you’re not familiar with Xavier Williams, he is must-see viewing. The 6’1, 190ish product doesn’t have superior straight-line speed, but he is excellent fighting off jams, uses his hands well to get leverage, has great body control, but especially excels at getting separation and will fight for the ball.
Rivals makes a comparison to Jerry Jeudy, and the explosion is similar. But, I think the similarities end there. The more apt comparison seems to be Kevin Norwood, another lithe receiver with great body control and a knack for finding space. Xavier will need to bulk up a bit to improve his blocking, and think he most likely projects to the slot at this level.
The position receiver ain’t dead, y’all: Josh Reed made a decade-long living off of it. WR Coach Josh Gattis is going to love working his shiny new toys.
