Jumbo Package: Primo recognized, Marrone officially announced, Cornbread breaks the scale

Happy Tuesday, everyone.

Our package is more medium sized than jumbo today, but here’s what we got. Josh Primo was recognized for his big week.

If Josh is ready to break out, as he appears to be, the sky is the limit for this team. More basketball coverage will be posted later as the now top ten ranked team preps for the rematch with Kentucky.

Doug Marrone was officially announced as OL coach.

“We are extremely fortunate to be able to add Doug Marrone to our staff,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “He knows our new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien well and will do a fantastic job with our offensive line. He has extensive experience as not only an offensive line coach, but also as a head coach at Syracuse and in the NFL with Buffalo and Jacksonville. Doug has an excellent track record for recruiting and developing players. I’m excited about his ability to help our players reach their full potential.”

Saban’s staff is now complete with the exception of special teams. The offensive side turned over completely, but it appears that he managed to hold onto everyone on defense. That should bode well for next season.

I’m not ready to invoke the 2016 defense, which was special in its own way, but I do think this year’s defense can be good. The experience level should make it so in its own right. Even with Patrick Surtain II and Christian Barmore leaving early, LaBryan Ray is back, Timothy Smith showed signs of being great, Christian Harris is the man in the middle, Christopher Allen and Will Anderson could wreck shop on the outside and the secondary seems pretty loaded with solid players. It also appears that Pete Golding is back for another season. I know he’s not the most popular guy on staff, but the defense could’ve really gone south after the Ole Miss game. Instead, it bounced back to at least be decent.

People continue to complain about Pete, and Saban keeps on retaining him. Rinse and repeat.

Last, a few Senior Bowl notes. Cornbread is really, really big, y’all.

That is a full 20 lbs. heavier than D.J. Fluker, who stands two inches taller. Do not cross this man.

Smitty decided he would wait on the measurements.

Word is that he hopes to add some pounds before officially weighing in, which is probably smart.

2. Najee Harris, RB, Alabama: Running backs are difficult to evaluate in all-star settings, given that there is limited live-tackling until game day. Though he’s been nursing an ankle injury, Harris — the Crimson Tide’s all-time leading rusher — is expected to give it a go this week in Mobile.

3. Mac Jones, QB, Alabama: Jones is universally regarded as the highest-rated quarterback in Mobile this week, which is something considering he was mostly an afterthought as a recruit. The question he has to answer this week is “did Jones make his teammates look good or did his teammates make him look good?”
